Our History

Founded by David Holmes, Dan Saraceno, and Dennis Maloney.

From our humble beginnings of one crew, a grant from NW Area Foundation and a partnership with Deschutes Juvenile Justice, the Stewardship program began to take the shape it has today.

the US Forest Service and HOC began to partner on the COYCC program, expanding the number of crews from 1 to 22 operating in 4 counties.

HOC was selected to launch an AmeriCorps program-part of the national Civic Justice Corps pilot. With funding from AmeriCorps distributed through The Corps Network, HOC successfully implemented this ground breaking restorative justice program.

HOC launched its Employer Advisory Board to ensure we were training youth in skills that local employers demanded. The Board also helps HOC find appropriate and engaging employment for our successful graduates.

HOC was selected to launch the first YouthBuild program in Central Oregon with 1.1 million dollars of funding from the Department of Labor and generous support from Redmond and Jefferson County School Districts. HOC also moved into its Operations Center on the campus of Marshall High School—our very first home of our own!

Ten Year Anniversary. Heart of Oregon Corps 10 Year Anniversary

Most recently, HOC is partnering with Bend Area Habitat for Humanity to launch another AmeriCorps program, the Clean Energy Service Corps to weatherize affordable housing.
